Teaching in Year 5/6 is skills based through a topic and cross-curricular approach. Maths, English and Science are focused on as our core curriculum subjects which we weave into our topic approach to involve other foundation subjects eg Music, Religious Education, History, Geography, Design and Technology, Art and Computing. On Monday afternoons we have Forest Schools where the children learn cross curricular subjects outdoors. Our topic this term is The Vikings. In science we will be exploring Evolution and Inheritance followed by Animals and their Habitats.

In P.E. the children will be taking part in hockey and dance which will be every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. On the days we don’t have P.E. we will still get outside to run for a period of time. Children should have a t-shirt and shorts but as it gets colder they may want tracksuit bottoms if we are working outside. Spare socks would also be useful in P.E. bags for when children wear tights to school. Please make sure the children have appropriate plimsolls or trainers in school.

Year 6 are expected to lead by example and to set the tone as ambassadors for the school. They have a range of additional responsibilities ranging from sports leaders, playground buddies, to register and music monitors.

I am very keen that we have a positive learning environment in our classroom this year and that all children have the opportunity to learn without disruption. I hope that we can work closely together so that the children work to their potential.

Please continue to support your child with reading at home and help them to continue to speed up the recall of their times tables which will assist them in all aspects of their maths.
