This is emphasised in our school rule – “ We look after our school and everything in it.”
We regularly hold assemblies, family and concerts for our local community and also visit a local residential home for the elderly.
RULE OF LAW
At Woodfield, we have our own set of school rules () which remind us how to be the very best that we can be.
In discrete PSHE sessions our older children learn about the differences between rules and laws and issues raised within both. In explicit sessions the children in UKS2 learn about the judiciary system within GB.
All of our children from Birch (Y1) to Willow (Y5/6) democratically elect two children to represent them on the school council. Then they meet regularly to discuss ways in which to improve our school.
All children in years 1 to 6 are members of a Pupil Voice Group. These groups meet fortnightly during curriculum time to make decisions about their area of leadership.
During local & General elections, we hold ‘mock elections’ with children from UKS2 campaigning for votes from the other children,
Each year pupils from Willow class visit the local council chamber where they are given the opportunity to talk to and question the Mayor of Harrogate.
TOLERANCE & UNDERSTANDING
At Woodfield, we celebrate and embrace difference of any kind.
We hold assemblies led by members of other faiths and are lucky to have members of staff who willingly share the differences between the cultures of their birth country and GB.
We recognise and celebrate the major faiths within GB and have taken part in days dedicated to a particular topic – most recently a Festival of Light – looking at religious festivals from around the world.
We have a link with a school in Kirehe, Rwanda and hopefully in the near future will establish links with a school in Sri Lanka. We can celebrate the cultural differences between our own school in Europe and those in Africa and Asia.
We also hold explicit sessions in SRE which recognise gender stereotypes and celebrate personal difference. You may like to look at the attached information about Yasmin and Tome, our PSHCE programme.
From the EYFS upwards we have a programme in place to ensure that all of our children have high levels of self-esteem. We focus on having a growth mindset, being positive role models and encouraging children to be the very best that they can be, despite the challenges that they may face.

We also encourage the older children to take part in short mindfulness exercises.
In Willow class the children discuss The Rights of a Child,initially in Circle Time, then research how other children live, particularly in under developed countries.
